Chapter 688

Author: Faith Shaw
Felix was just a bit slower.

James gave him a smug look, feeling proud of his quick reaction!

Inside, Nina was startled by their shouting. Flustered, she quickly pushed Nash away!

She then picked up her fork, pretending nothing had happened. Her face flushed red, and she dared not look up, hoping they had not noticed anything.

Nash, taken aback by the sudden push, stumbled back a couple of steps, surprised by Nina's strength.

He looked towards the door and saw the two men standing like watchmen, blocking the view.

Nash's face darkened with irritation, his sharp eyes fixing on them. His moment with Nina had been interrupted, and he was far from pleased.

James and Felix looked inside, seeing only the couple eating breakfast, completely unaware that they had just interrupted an intimate moment of them kissing.

Nash's clothes were wrinkled due to the result of Nina's grip, making him look slightly disheveled.

As a straightforward man with little romantic experience, James did

He then gave Nina a kiss on the forehead before leaving with peace of mind. Nina walked him to the door, watching as James and Felix were still running, drenched in sweat and repeating their chants. She felt a bit sorry for them.Only after Nash got into the car and called them back did they finish their run. Watching them leave, Nina returned to the house. She checked her phone first and was pleased to see that 'Glory' was gaining more and more popularity each day.Nelly had complimented her sharp eye for spotting a good script, admitting that she herself didn't have such foresight.Meanwhile, Penelope Zhang's popularity had skyrocketed. The largest billboard in the city center featured her image, and fans had bought subway ads to play her show three times a day. Discussions were buzzing. Meanwhile, Nina had changed into a new dress and applied some lipstick, looking much more refreshed. She grabbed her purse, ready to go out. Just as she stepped outside, James's car pulled up at the entrance. He quickly got out of the car. "Ma'am," James called out.Nina was a bit surprised. "Didn't you leave with Nash?"James smiled broadly. "Captain sent me here. He wanted to make sure I handed the antidote directly to you."He produced the well-preserved vial of the antidote.Nina took the vial from him, even more surprised. "It's ready?""Yes, as soon as Captain got it, he sent me straight here," James said excitedly."Alright."Holding the vial, Nina felt a mix of emotions. The shadow of the poisoning still loomed large in her mind. She had not expected the antidote to be ready so soon. It all felt almost surreal.Scott was still abroad, searching for an antidote for her. Could it really be this easy to find one? Though she didn’t voice it, she still worried about Sco

Nash furrowed his brows, clearly running out of patience. "Is this the important matter you wanted to discuss?" "No," Miranda replied softly. "This is my most important matter. Once I've said my piece, I'll get to what's most important for you."Nash did not respond verbally, but his eyes communicated to Miranda that his patience was wearing thin. She sighed softly, a bitter smile on her lips. "When have I ever lied to you? Just listen to me, and you'll understand."Miranda's feelings for Nash were genuine. She might have deceived many people and committed countless unscrupulous acts, but Nash was the one person she had always treated sincerely."In your mind, you think I rescued you from the organization, but it was you who saved me," Miranda began. "I took advantage of your kindness, your sense of duty as a soldier, trying to erase my own dark past. But no man had ever treated me the way you did. The first thing you did when you woke up was ask for me. 'Where is Miranda?' you

They had not fulfilled their duties as parents and grandfather, so why were they so harsh and unloving towards her? She hated them. Her downfall was entirely their fault!"No matter what you believe, those are the facts," Nash stated."No! They never loved me. Only you did. You love me!" Miranda clung to the bars. She refused to accept that Nash's kindness was just an obligation, following his grandfather's wishes."Grandfather was a rational man," Nash continued. "He knew the difference between right and wrong. The York family wasn't left to William but to an outsider like me because he knew the family couldn't be destroyed."This was why Miranda could never return to the York family. Her malicious intent was clear to Grandfather. Even if he knew she was his granddaughter, he had to think about the family's well-being. Revealing her identity would have been disastrous. For Miranda, this was a heavy blow. She had lived, believing in Nash's love, confident he would fall for her a

Nina did not want him to feel guilty. He had already done everything he could for her. Life was unpredictable, and she had accepted it with a calm heart. She just hoped he would not carry too much burden.Hearing her words, Nash felt even more helpless. He could save everyone else, but he couldn't save her, and that feeling of powerlessness was overwhelming. He didn't want her to see his tear-filled eyes, so he hugged her tightly and kissed her forehead, trying to alleviate his own pressure and pain. He wished he could bear her pain, even if it meant suffering twice as much.Nina was gently placed on the hospital bed, holding Nash's hand to give him and herself the strength to carry on. She was determined to survive. She would survive.Soon, Wilfred arrived. This was a hospital that Nash had invested in, equipped with the most advanced facilities. But Nash knew that only Wilfred could save Nina, so he did not let the doctors in, waiting instead for Wilfred's arrival."How

If it were the old him, he might have been this selfish. After all, he did not want Nina to have anyone else in her heart. But Wilfred was different. Wilfred’s dedication to Nina was selfless, making it impossible for anyone to harden their heart against him.Wilfred looked back at Nash. "You don't want her to be sad, right? If she remembers, it will break her heart."Nash pressed his lips together and changed the subject. "Do you have any family? Would you like me to help you find them?"Wilfred and Scarlett had grown up in the organization, never knowing where home was. Nash wondered if Wilfred missed having a family."No need," Wilfred replied without hesitation. "Wherever I am, that’s home."With that, Wilfred stood up, hands in his pockets, and said, "Don't rely on others for the cure. I'll find a way. Just take good care of Nina. However, there is something strange...""What is it?" Nash asked."Pharaoh's poison is potent, but it hasn't fully invaded Nina's body. Her bab

"I need to see Nina!" Scarlett could not wait any longer in the hospital room."No way. You're a prisoner. You can't leave the room," James replied."You can follow me, can't you? Do you think I can run in my current state?" Scarlett could not understand his stubbornness.James was firm. "Without orders from above, you can't take a single step out of this room."Seeing he was unmoved, Scarlett's expression hardened. "What if I insist on seeing her?"James started to respond, "Then I'm sorry, but—"Before he could finish, Scarlett slapped him hard across the face.James was taken aback by her fierceness. He had not expected her to get physical. He had been disciplined before, but never hit by a woman."You shrew..."Scarlett, balancing on her crutch, kicked at him again. She was not one to back down easily. She had tolerated him long enough, with all the rules and strict treatment. Being cooped up in the hospital room was driving her crazy. She just wanted to see Nina, but he

"You..." James was at a loss for words. His good intentions were completely misunderstood, and no matter what he said, it would be wrong in her eyes. He felt a bit aggrieved, never having dealt with such a difficult woman before.Scarlett, not wanting to argue further, turned to Felix and asked, "You said I could see Nina. I'm injured and can't escape even if I wanted to. Even if I'm guilty, I should be allowed to visit her until the charges are official. I've cooperated with your investigation. You could at least grant me this one request."Felix nodded in agreement and said to James, "Let's cut her some slack. Even Nash hasn't objected. We should show some humanity."Reluctantly, James agreed. "Fine."Scarlett calmed down, realizing they were willing to cooperate. Although she left the organization, she did not have many people in this world that she truly cared about. The only ones she worried for and valued were those few people. She would not run away. After Yvette finished her rant, she finally got to the point.Karina learned that Dr. Lincoln had transferred out, leaving a vacant spot for a new director at the hospital.“So someone new is being transferred in,” she mused, absentmindedly nibbling on her pen. “I wonder who it could be.”But even Yvette, the self-proclaimed hospital gossip queen who usually knew everything, was stumped this time.“For once, I’ve got nothing,” she admitted, crossing her arms. “But I’ll bet you anything—they must have serious connections. Someone like that doesn’t just fly under the radar.”Karina just shook her head. Gossip wasn’t really her thing. She usually listened and moved on without a second thought. This time was no different. To her, it didn’t really matter who the new director was. After all, what were the odds it would be someone she knew? She would soon find out just how wrong she was.Not only did she know the new director, but she knew him very well. On his first day, Karina

Hearing Wilfred’s suggestion, Karina was stunned for a moment. After some careful thought, she shook her head. “No, I’d rather not.”Now it was Wilfred’s turn to be caught off guard.“Switching back and forth isn’t a solution. Looking back, I shouldn’t have left in the first place. Were those people really capable of doing anything to me? Probably not. I just wanted to avoid trouble,” Karina said slowly.A person’s family would have a way of shaping their personality, and Karina’s upbringing with the Stone family had left her overly cautious—afraid of causing trouble or confronting conflict. But now, after everything she’d been through, she wasn’t scared anymore. Trouble was just trouble. She could handle it. “I’ll face whatever comes my way,” she added. “If it’s a challenge, I’ll rise to it.” When she shared her thoughts, there was silence on the other end of the line. Worried she might have disappointed him, Karina hesitated. “Did I let you down?” “No.” Wilfred’s quiet

Karina heard Harley’s parting word, but she didn’t stop walking. She already had someone like Wilfred who dared to stand up against authority. She wasn’t alone in her fight. When she returned, Yvette bombarded her with questions about her visit to the association. Karina chose to gloss over certain details, recounting only the less controversial parts. Even that left Yvette in awe. "You actually turned them down? You really did? Gosh, I admire you!" Yvette exclaimed.Karina swatted Yvette’s exaggerated thumbs-up. "Cut it out. I’m barely holding it together. I was so nervous."Yvette’s face twisted in mock disappointment. "You? Nervous? Where’s all that boss energy you walked in here with?""Boss energy? More like trembling cowardice," Karina retorted with a wry smile. "I was barely holding my knees steady in there."“No wonder people used to bow down to authority back in the day,” she thought. Standing her ground in front of someone like Professor Zeller had been nearly impos

Karina wasn’t naive enough to take Professor Zeller’s words as a compliment. Given his position and history with Wilfred, it was far more likely he was testing her or subtly undermining her. Still, Karina knew how to hold her ground. “So, Professor Zeller,” she began calmly, though her nails were already digging into her palms, leaving crescent-shaped imprints. “Why exactly did you call me here? I have responsibilities back at the hospital, and I’d prefer not to waste time.” Professor Zeller raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into an amused smirk. “You’re quite fond of your current job, aren’t you?” “Yes, I am.” Karina’s voice was steady, though her body was tense. She couldn’t afford to offend him—not someone with his influence. Zeller studied her in silence for a moment, then tilted his head with a thoughtful frown. “There’s something familiar about you... but I can’t quite place it.” Karina blinked, caught off guard, but before she could ask, he shook his head. “N

If Harley had never seen Karina’s genuine smile, perhaps he wouldn’t have noticed. But he had seen how she smiled at Wilfred, so radiant and pure it could light up a room. In contrast, her cold indifference toward him was painfully stark.Sliding the key into the ignition, Harley glanced at her through the rearview mirror. “Can’t you at least crack a smile? All this frowning—it’s hard to look at.”Karina didn’t even bother turning her head. “I’m a doctor, not here to provide entertainment. If you’re that desperate for a smile, hit up a bar tonight. You can pay someone to grin at you all you want.”Harley froze, his expression darkening ever so slightly. For a moment, he was genuinely at a loss for words. Apart from Wilfred, no one else had ever managed to leave him speechless quite like this.Karina remained oblivious or perhaps indifferent to the fact that she had joined Wilfred in Harley’s mental list of thoroughly disliked people. And even if she knew, it wouldn’t have fazed her

Although Karina had no idea what they intended, with Harley already waiting outside her office, she figured she had no choice but to meet him. Taking a few deep breaths to steady herself, she entered her office. Harley stood by the window, examining her pot of red dianthus on the windowsill. Karina frowned. “Dr. Carter, that plant is mine. Please be careful not to knock it over.”As soon as the words left her mouth— Crash! The flower pot toppled off the windowsill, shattering into pieces on the floor. Karina jumped in shock, quickly followed by relief. At least it had shattered indoors and not fallen outside. Someone could have been seriously hurt if it had. But that didn’t stop her from getting angry. “Dr. Carter, what’s the meaning of this?” she snapped, her frustration evident. She had barely finished warning him, and the pot had already fallen. Was that really just an accident?Harley pocketed his hands and apologized with an infuriating nonchalance. “My apo

Wilfred ended up eating two full bowls without realizing it. Only when he couldn’t take another bite did he put his spoon down and wipe his mouth. “The porridge is well made,” he remarked. The housekeeper chuckled. “It’s all thanks to Miss Karina’s idea. And to think I’m a certified nutritionist, but I didn’t come up with something like this. It’s a good thing she was here today!” Karina smiled sheepishly. “It’s just something I learned growing up in a regular household. We didn’t have much, and when I didn’t have an appetite as a kid, I’d make this porridge for myself. I’d always end up eating a lot. So, I figured it might work this time too. I’m glad it turned out well.” The housekeeper insisted she was being modest, showering Karina with praise. Wilfred, watching the simple yet thoughtful meal on the table, felt a rare warmth in his chest. It might not compare to a five-star meal, but knowing that every bite was made with care, specifically for him, made it more satis

Karina wasn’t eager to turn to the association for help. After all, the people there weren’t just disliked by Wilfred—she couldn’t stand them either. Hesitating, she muttered, “When the time comes, something will work out… right?” Wilfred glanced at her indecisive expression and sighed lightly. He could already tell she hadn’t given the matter much thought. “I figured it’d be like this. I’ve already thought it through for you. If you need a recommendation letter, I’ll write one for you.” “Really?” Karina’s eyes lit up, and she couldn’t suppress the excitement in her voice. She had considered asking Wilfred for help. His reputation and capabilities were unmatched—even those in the association couldn’t hold a candle to him. But Karina had hesitated, feeling like she had already leaned on him for too much. He had helped her in countless ways. Asking for a recommendation letter felt like pushing the boundaries of her gratitude. Her joy didn’t last long before she falte

Wilfred coughed lightly and replied, “There’s nothing else to do while staying in the room.” His explanation only made things worse. Karina’s brows shot up immediately. “What do you mean by nothing else to do?” Her expression turned serious, and her tone carried an unusual firmness. “It doesn’t matter. When you’re sick, you need to rest properly. Your book is confiscated. Go lie down.” It was the first time someone had ordered Wilfred around like this, and he found it oddly amusing. Of course, if it had been anyone else, he wouldn’t have listened. Only Karina could manage to sway him. Even so, Wilfred didn’t head to bed but remained seated in his chair. “You mentioned earlier that you came because of something. What is it?” Karina hesitated briefly. “Well, the association sent me an email. I just saw it. They’re inviting me to visit when I have time.” As soon as she finished, she watched Wilfred’s reaction nervously. Knowing his antagonism toward the association
