Alex

Sleep was a luxury I couldn’t afford. I lay in bed, my thoughts a tangled mess, replaying the night’s confrontation with my father and the chilling events that led to it. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Liam—bleeding, crumpled in that alley, his lifeless eyes burning into my soul.

Despite Elena’s insistence that he was fine, a gnawing worry clawed at me.

What if she was wrong? What if something happened to him, and no one wanted to tell me?

I grabbed my phone from the nightstand, scrolling to Liam’s contact. My thumb hesitated over the call button, my mind racing.

What if he doesn’t pick up? What if something’s happened, and I’m the last to know?

Pushing the doubts aside, I hit the button and held the phone to my ear.

“The number you have dialed is not available. Please leave a message after the beep.”

The robotic voice grated on my nerves, and I cursed under my breath. It was the same as before, straight to voicemail.

“Liam, it’s me. Look, I know we haven’t spoken

66AlexHer voice came through the line, dripping with feigned sweetness. “Good morning to you too, Alex.” “I don’t have time for your games,” I said, cutting her off. “If you’ve got something to say, say it.” “Oh, I have plenty to say,” she replied, her voice turning icy. “But maybe I should just say it in person. Would that get your attention?” “What part of ‘I’m not interested’ don’t you understand?” I snapped. “You’ll want to hear this,” she said smugly. “Trust me.” “Trust you?” I laughed bitterly. “That’s rich.” “Suit yourself,” she said, her tone maddeningly calm. “But when this all blows up in your face, don’t say I didn’t warn you.” I hesitated, her words gnawing at the edges of my resolve. “What are you talking about?” “I’m talking about your father,” she said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “And the little deal he made with the Nightshade family. You might want to reconsider ignoring me, Alex. This concerns you more than you think.” My bloo

67LiamThe brisk chill of the Norwegian winter filtered into my room, even though the thick curtains were drawn tight against the windows. I leaned back on the enormous bed, its ornate posts stretching toward the high ceiling of my room in the royal palace. Weeks had passed since the summit, but the ache in my side was a persistent reminder of the bullet I’d taken for Alex. Mom, ever the image of a queen, had ensured I was taken care of in the most extravagant way possible. Two nurses hovered around me daily, tending to my wound as if I were made of glass. This morning was no exception. They flitted about, adjusting bandages, checking my vitals, and murmuring politely before finally leaving me in peace. The door clicked shut behind them, and I exhaled deeply, letting the silence wrap around me. But the peace didn’t last long. “Honestly, Liam, I don’t know what you were thinking,” my mother said as she swept into the room, her elegant heels clicking against the marble floor. She

68LiamThe door creaked open again, and I groaned, bracing myself for Anders to come sauntering back in with another cutting remark. But when I looked up, my breath caught in my throat. Standing in the doorway, his once-proud shoulders slightly hunched, was my father. The room felt like it had dropped several degrees. I stared at him, my mind racing. It had been—what? Ten years since I’d last seen him? Since he’d walked out of the palace, abandoning everything? Abandoning us. “Liam,” he said, his voice rougher than I remembered, like gravel scraping against metal. Sophia looked between us, her hazel eyes wide. She opened her mouth to say something but seemed to think better of it. She squeezed my hand once before standing. “I’ll... give you two some privacy,” she murmured, her gaze lingering on me before she slipped out the door. The silence that followed was deafening. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to find my voice. “What are you doing here?” I asked, my tone colder t

69LiamVictor’s arrival felt like the spark that would ignite an explosion, and it did not take long for the firestorm to begin. The icy tension in the room grew thicker as my mother’s face turned from shock to pure rage. Anders was no better, his jaw clenched so tightly it seemed his teeth might crack. Meanwhile, Victor—my father—stood there with the same calm defiance, as though he had already prepared for this battle long before stepping into the palace. “Guards!” my mother barked, her voice cutting through the heavy silence like a whip. “Remove this man from my sight immediately!” Victor didn’t flinch. He stood tall, his dark eyes unwavering. “I wouldn’t do that, Lila,” he said quietly. “Not unless you want your son to hate you even more than he already does.” I stiffened at his words, though I couldn’t deny the truth in them. Anders stepped forward, his voice laced with venom. “You have no right to speak to her like that, FATHER,” he spat, the title dripping with sarcas

70I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the muted news on my TV. I could see the headlines scrolling across the screen, and every word felt like a dagger. “Presidential Family Scandal Continues to Erupt.” My father’s name blared in bold text, paired with phrases like “Nightshade Deal Allegations” and “Unrest in the Administration.”It was all falling apart, piece by piece, and I was at the center of it. Or maybe, as I was starting to suspect, Charlotte was the one pulling the strings. The bitch. The thought made my blood boil. It was her. It had to be. Everything—the pressure from my father, the growing media frenzy—it all pointed back to her manipulations. And yet, my father didn’t see it. No, to him, I was the problem. “Alex!” his voice bellowed from down the hall, loud and impatient. I groaned, tossing a pillow at the wall in frustration. I knew exactly what he wanted, and I wasn’t in the mood to hear it. But avoiding him wasn’t an option. Not in this house. Draggin

Alex The weight of the news was suffocating, but I couldn’t stay in that room any longer. My father’s silence had spoken volumes, and I needed to breathe. I needed to think. “Elena,” I said, my voice strained. “Let’s get out of here.” She hesitated, glancing between me and my father. “Alex, are you sure? I mean, with everything going on…” “I need air,” I said firmly, grabbing my coat. “I can’t stay here.” Elena nodded reluctantly, grabbing her bag. The tension in the room crackled as we left without another word. My father didn’t even try to stop us. The moment we stepped outside, the cold air hit me like a slap, but it wasn’t enough to clear my head. The city felt louder than usual—cars honking, people shouting, the buzz of life moving on while my own felt like it was imploding. Elena walked beside me, her arms crossed tightly against the chill. “Where are we going?” “Anywhere but here,” I muttered. We ended up at a small restaurant tucked away on a quiet street. It

72AlexI stood frozen for a second, staring at the black SUV and the woman sitting inside like she owned the world. Her dark red lips curved into a smirk, her posture relaxed yet commanding.“Get in,” Charlotte repeated, her voice sharp, her perfectly manicured nails tapping impatiently on the car door.I scoffed, stepping back. “Not a chance.”“Alex,” Elena hissed beside me, tugging at my sleeve as she glanced nervously at the horde of journalists swarming us like locusts. “We need to go. Now.”“We’ll find another way,” I muttered stubbornly, gripping her hand tighter and pushing through the crowd. But it was pointless. The reporters were relentless, their microphones thrust so close I thought they’d hit me in the face.“Alex, do you deny the allegations?”“Is Charlotte blackmailing you?”“Will the Nightshade family take control of your father’s empire?”The barrage of questions pounded against my ears, drowning everything else out. Cameras flashed wildly, blinding me with every ste

But if you’re done whining, we should get inside. We don’t have time for this tantrum.”Elena shifted nervously beside me, gripping my arm as though she could anchor me to sanity. Her voice was soft but strained. “Alex, we don’t have to stay. We can leave right now.”I shot Charlotte a glare, silently daring her to stop us. “She’s right. Open the damn door.”Charlotte’s smirk faltered just a little as her gaze narrowed on me. “Suit yourself. 112---**Liam**The crash sent a jolt through the room, pulling every pair of eyes—including mine—toward the source of the commotion. My instincts sharpened, and I clenched my fists, trying to keep my composure. The tension between Alex and Marcus had already been bad enough. Now this?I moved swiftly through the crowd, my jaw set, ignoring the curious whispers and judgmental stares from the guests. The scene that met me near the center of the hall was one I’d been hoping to avoid. Marcus, ever the arrogant snake, stood with his hands raised in mock surrender, a smirk playing on his lips. Across from him was Lucas—our youngest cousin—his face red with fury and his chest heaving as if he were about to throw another punch."Who the hell do you think you are, talking to my brother like that?" Lucas barked, his voice carrying over the stunned silence."Lucas, stand down," I ordered, my voice low but commanding as I stepped between them. My tone left no room for argument, but Lucas didn’t

111AlexI followed Charlotte back toward the grand hall, my thoughts a storm of anger and confusion. The Queen’s words echoed in my mind, but so did Liam’s hurtful accusations, his betrayal. What the hell had I done wrong? Why was I always the villain in their perfect little world? As we stepped inside, the noise of the party hit us like a wall. People milled around in their expensive gowns and suits, laughing, talking, pretending everything was fine. But I knew better. The air was thick with tension, just beneath the surface, waiting for something—someone—to snap.Charlotte tugged me toward the drink table, offering me a drink with a knowing glance. "You need something stronger," she said, pouring whiskey into a glass. "Trust me, it helps."I took the glass, the burn of the alcohol doing little to dull the fury coursing through my veins. "I never asked for any of this," I muttered, swirling the liquid around the glass. "I never asked to be in this ridiculous game.""Yeah, well, none

110Alex### **Alex**The silence of the garden was a fragile reprieve, one I desperately needed after the chaos inside. My mind churned with Liam’s words, his anger, his pain—and my own foolish inability to let him go. The memory of his eyes, sharp and accusing, lingered like a wound I couldn’t stop pressing. I didn’t realize Charlotte had found me until her heels clicked against the stone pathway. "Figured I’d find you brooding out here," she said, her voice light but laced with irritation. I glanced over my shoulder. She stood there in her emerald gown, arms crossed, the moonlight catching the auburn in her hair. Her expression was an artful blend of amusement and exasperation, but I knew her well enough to spot the storm brewing underneath. "What do you want, Charlotte?" I asked, turning back to the fountain ahead of me. She huffed, moving to stand beside me. "Well, you didn’t exactly make it easy for me to enjoy the open bar after that little display with *His Royal Hig

109liam**Liam** The cool air in the corridor barely registered, my chest still tight from the confrontation. Alex’s words lingered, sharp and unforgiving, carving through the carefully constructed barriers I’d built over the years. The sound of his retreating footsteps echoed in my ears, but I didn’t move. Not yet. I clenched my fists, trying to steady my breathing. This wasn’t how tonight was supposed to go. Sophia’s presence had saved us both from saying something we’d regret, but her soft, knowing gaze as she left had only made the situation worse. She didn’t know—not about Alex, not about the weight of our history—but the tension must have been written all over my face. And Alex... I hated him for showing up. For being here. For still having the power to unravel me with a single look. But more than anything, I hated myself for wanting him to stay. I straightened my shoulders and turned on my heel, heading for the main hall. If Alex thought he could storm out of m

108 **Alex** The applause had faded into a polite murmur, the sound of it hollow and detached, like it came from another world. My throat was tight, my pulse unsteady, but I kept my face neutral, diplomatic. Years of public scrutiny had trained me well, but even so, standing here under Liam’s searing gaze felt like being on trial.I turned my attention back to Charlotte, who was still smirking, thoroughly enjoying the spectacle. Her arm looped through mine, and she leaned in again, her voice a conspiratorial whisper. "Do you think he’ll throw a punch? Because honestly, I wouldn’t blame him." I gave her a warning look. "Enough, Charlotte." She laughed softly, undeterred, and released my arm. “Fine. I’ll go enjoy the open bar while you clean up this mess. Try not to embarrass yourself.” Before I could retort, she was gone, disappearing into the sea of glittering gowns and tailored suits. I exhaled sharply, scanning the room for Queen Eleanor. She was by the dais now, her sa

107 Liam I clenched my fists so hard that my nails dug into my palms, the sting grounding me just enough to keep my composure. My jaw tightened, and I could feel the heat rising in my face as my thoughts spiraled. How dare my mother invite him without telling me? I stole a glance at her. She stood at the edge of the crowd, her chin held high, her expression regal and impenetrable. But she knew. She had to know what this would do to me. And Alex. Damn him. He showed up here like nothing had happened, like he hadn’t ignored every single one of my calls, like he hadn’t vanished without a word after everything we went through. After I had taken a bullet for him. “Liam.” Sophia’s voice pulled me from my raging thoughts. She squeezed my hand, her brow furrowed with worry. “Are you okay? You’re trembling.” I forced myself to loosen my grip, offering her a weak smile. “I’m fine,” I lied, my voice hollow. “Just a little overwhelmed.” Her eyes searched mine, doubt flickering in

106Alex The tension in the room was palpable as Queen Eleanor made her way toward the front, her presence commanding attention. I felt all eyes on me, the weight of their scrutiny almost suffocating. Charlotte, always the opportunist, squeezed my arm and chuckled softly."You're quite the spectacle, Alex. I can't believe you just walked in like that." Her voice was teasing, but there was something dangerous in her tone."Not the time, Charlotte," I muttered, feeling a headache building behind my eyes."You always say that," she whispered back, her grin widening. "But I think this is the time for you to finally face the music. You can't keep running from this."I shot her a warning glance, but her amusement only deepened. As Queen Eleanor reached the altar, I could feel the murmur of the crowd intensifying. The whispers had now shifted from shock to speculation."What was that about? Did he really just say he didn’t know?""I heard they don't get along. Family politics, maybe?""Is t

105AlexThe room was as silent as a tomb, save for the rustle of whispers that spread like wildfire and the faint echo of my footsteps against the polished marble floor. My heart hammered as I stepped deeper into the grand hall, the towering crystal chandeliers casting fractured rainbows across the walls. My eyes locked onto Liam’s, his face frozen in a kaleidoscope of emotions: shock, disbelief, and simmering fury. His bride—Sophia, yes, that was her name—shifted her wide-eyed gaze between us, her confusion palpable. Her fingers hovered uncertainly near Liam's arm, as though unsure whether to hold on or let go.Around us, the crowd came alive with murmurs, the dignitaries and royals exchanging incredulous glances, their whispers growing louder with every passing second."Is that... the President?""Why would he—here? 104LiamAs the grand doors to the ceremony hall loomed ahead, I could feel the weight of every step I took. The golden trim on the marble floor glinted in the sunlight streaming through the high windows, but it did nothing to warm the chill inside me. “Your Highness, would you like a moment before entering?” the servant asked, his voice quiet, almost hesitant. I paused, considering it for the briefest moment, before shaking my head. “No,” I said firmly, though my voice betrayed the tremor in my chest. “Let’s get this over with.” The servant nodded and pushed open the doors. The hall was magnificent—vaulted ceilings adorned with intricate frescoes, rows of pews filled with royalty, dignitaries, and guests dressed in their finest. A massive floral arrangement framed the altar at the front, where my bride-to-be stood, her back to me, speaking softly with her bridesmaids. The string quartet played a delicate melody, but the sound barely registered. My eyes swept the crowd, inst
