CHAPTER NINE

Rosalind

“Rosalind.”

The lawyer who I thought already left called me softly and I turned to her with hope in my eyes.

She gave a smile and let out a sigh.

But before she could utter another word, a loud round of applause echoed from the guests and I looked up to the stage to find the celebrant, Shawn, giving a warm smile to the guests.

He was about to say his speech and he looked confident and smart as he waited for the applause to quiet down, exuding a charm I knew was the reason he had so many guests come to celebrate him.

“Thank you, thank you.” His voice came into the speakers, and he began his speech but I couldn’t completely focus, not when the lawyer wanted to say more things, maybe change her mind about being James’ lawyer and pairing up with me instead, although I knew that was unlikely.

This was all in vain, coming to the party.

I put my hope up, just for them to be squashed under both James’s million dollar shoe, and the lawyer’s pencil heeled ones.
