“How is she?” Xavier asked Private, who he had invited into his home office.

Private always came whenever his boss required his presence. In some weird way, Xavier considered him a friend even though he was too proud to admit it.

“She’s fine,” he answered and reclined in his seat, showing that was all he planned to say on the matter.

Xavier sighed. “You know what I mean. What is she doing these days? Where is she staying? How is she coping?”

He knew the response Private would give even before he answered.
